The City of SalzburgWinter romance, tradition and 190 years of "Silent night, holy night"
Salzburg is attracting visitors this Winter with it's Christmas markets and thought provoking music events, but, not only via it's well known romantic side, it also has a special cause for celebration: The most famous Christmas carol in the world has it's origins here and is celebrating its 190th birthday. Salzburg earned the title of "Advent City" a long time ago. Salzburg attracts you during the contemplative "quietest time", like at no other time of year. Wrapped in a gentle white cloak, the historical ambience of the UNESCO City of World Culture offers a fairy tale like stage for Christmas markets, beautiful music and traditional nativity plays.
The facts are both endearing and impressive. Salzburg has only around 150.000 inhabitants, but has more than 4000 cultural events every year and 20 baroque churches. The silhouette of the city is unmistakable; the Hohensalzburg fortress, the baroque cathedral, the Franciscan and University churches in front of the Mönchsberg and the mighty and legendary Untersberg in the distance. These are just a few of the numerous "musts" when you visit Salzburg.
